Frequently asked questions

What is ILM?
The Institute of Leadership and Management (ILM) is the UK’s premier body for leadership and management qualifications. Part of the City & Guilds’ group, ILM was formed in 2001 by the merger of The Institute of Supervisory Management (ISM) and NEBS Management.

Who recognises these qualifications?
ILM qualifications are based on recognised occupational standards and provide professional recognition of skills and achievement. ILM qualifications are widely recognised by many organisations within the public and private sectors.

Are they available to anyone?
Yes. They are open to anyone regardless of age, background or previous qualifications.

Are there any exams?
No. ILM qualifications are generally based around a structured training programme. Candidates are required to complete a specified number of learning hours which is different for each course. Candidates are also required to complete either short written 'segment reviews' on or immediately following the course modules, or 'reflective reviews' in the workplace. Some qualifications also require candidates to complete a work-based assignment.

Which ILM qualification is right for me?
ILM courses and qualifications are designed to be developmental, meaning that it is often appropriate to choose a qualification which is one or two levels above your current job role.

Our staff will be happy to advise you and help you choose the right qualification and level.

Will I have to attend any training courses?
Yes. Each ILM course requires candidates to undertake a defined number of hours of training. This is generally completed as in-company training in groups of 8-10.

How long will it take to achieve the qualification?
That will depend on the level of the course and how the programme is planned. Some ILM courses may be completed in several weeks whereas others may take 12 months or more.

How much written work is there?
Segment reviews and reflective reviews are generally about 100-125 words each. If your qualification requires a work-based assignment, then this is a substantial piece of written work which will generally be 1000-1500 words. This will usually take several weeks to complete.

Where will the training take place?
As we deliver ILM courses as in-company programmes, the training will take place at your work location or a suitable external location agreed with your company.

How often will the training take place?
This will depend on the course structure and is flexible to meet the needs of each organisation. Our programmes are generally divided into a series of one or two-day modules.

How many days of training will I need?
Please refer to the course outline for the typical duration and number of training days.

What is a typical group size?
We generally recommend a group size of 8-10 candidates to ensure a cost-effective programme. However, we are able to work with smaller groups if required.

How much will it cost?
Please contact Best Practice for fees and a quotation.
