What are Apprenticeships?
Apprenticeships are government-funded training programmes available
for young people generally aged 16-24. Apprenticeship programmes help young
people develop the skills that employers need.
Are they
available to anyone?
They are generally available to anyone between the ages of 16-24 who
is employed and who is a UK or EU citizen - or has indefinite leave to
remain and work in the UK. They are not available for those who are
in the UK on a temporary visa or student visa.
What subjects are available?
There is a wide range of different Apprenticeship programmes
available. Best Practice focuses on delivering Apprenticeships in
'business skills'. e.g. customer service, contact centre, business and
administration, financial services, team leading, management and IT.
How long is an Apprenticeship programme?
The programme length will depend on the subject
area, level and the individual. Most Apprenticeships are completed
in 6 to 12 months, although it may be longer or shorter in some cases.
Do Apprentices have to be in work?
Yes. An Apprenticeship is a work-based training programme.
Apprentices must have employed status and generally be working for
at least 16 hours per week.
Do Apprentices get paid?
Yes. Apprentices working full time must be paid by their employers at least £95 per
week. Part time Apprentices may be paid on a pro-rata basis.
Where does the training take place?
Most of the training and assessments will take place in the workplace.
Our trainers and assessors will visit the apprentices in the workplace every
2-4 weeks
to support, train and assess them.
What are
the elements of an Apprenticeship programme?
An Apprenticeship programme consists of a 'framework' of nationally
recognised qualifications. These generally consist of an NVQ,
Technical Certificate and Key Skills in Communication and Number.
How does
it link in with in-company training?
An Apprentice will often also need job-specific training. The
external elements of the programme can be arranged to dovetail with
any company or job-specific training that is required.
Are there different levels of Apprenticeship?
Yes. An Apprenticeship is based around a Level 2 NVQ, whereas an
Advanced Apprenticeship is based on a Level 3 NVQ.
Can existing staff do an Apprenticeship?
Yes. Subject to meeting eligibility criteria, existing staff can be
enrolled on an Apprenticeship programme to help them develop their
skills and achieve nationally recognised qualifications.
How do I go about recruiting an Apprentice?
If you want to recruit one or more new staff into your organisation
as apprentices, then please contact Best Practice. We have links
